COVID-19 Support for SD’s Somali Bantu

The COVID-19 health crisis presents considerable challenges to San Diego’s most vulnerable populations including the Somali Bantu community.

We are raising funds for COVID-19 care kits to be distributed to local Somali Bantu families through The Somali Bantu Association of America (please read more about SBAOA below).

The COVID-19 health crisis has hit the SBAOA and those they serve especially hard. Many local Somali Bantu lack the English skills to follow news updates and health advice. Due to the pandemic, many have lost their jobs and are struggling to secure essential resources working against linguistic and economic barriers.

100% of your donations will go to COVID-19 care kits which will include essential dried goods, hygienic items such as soap and feminine hygiene items and baby care items. Additionally all boxes will include an Informational Packet which will contain information on navigating this crisis and family protection tips which will be translated by the SBAOA team.

We will post updates to this page with photos of the kits and an update on the impact of your contributions.

Please consider donating to this fund to ensure that East Africa’s refugees and immigrants have the knowledge and resources they need to keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe during this time.

The Somali Bantu Association of America’s (SBAOA) mission is to advocate on behalf of the Somali Bantu and other similarly disadvantaged refugees for access to professional and educational resources so that families can make a successful cultural, economic, and social transition to life in the United States. The SBAOA provides services to assist families in becoming economically stable, civilly engaged members of our new community of San Diego, California.

Founded in 2009 by Said Abiyow, the Somali Bantu Association of America (SBAOA) educates, serves, and organizes cultural and life-skill training programs in an effort to promote self-sufficiency.

Located in City-Heights, SBAOA serves the surrounding Somali Bantu community and other East African refugees. SBAOA clients include men and women, children and seniors, and our services are offered free of charge. Last year the SBOAOA served over 4,000 refugees in San Diego.
