CD Softball Players to China!

Tax deductible
*November update:  The girls are making great progress (having raised almost $5k, $1600 on this site and $3400 outside of the site).  They have about $1600 each still to go.  Currently they are selling $20 gift certificates to St. Cloud's Restaurant ($20 price gets the buyer $20 in value).  There are two upcoming events at local restaurants (Nov 18th at McGilvras in Madison Park and Nov 19th at the Madrona Aleouse in Madrona).

CENTRAL DISTRICT FASTPITCH PLAYERS NOMINATED TO GO TO CHINA!

Three Central District students have been selected to travel to China for ten days this winter to participate in an International Softball Competition through Washington Cultural Exchange. Emma Hughes, Kaela Jackson, and NiRae Petty, all starting varsity softball players, were nominated by their coach at Garfield High School for the 2014 team drawn from across the State of Washington. The trip is part sports competition, part cultural exchange and is an extraordinary honor for three teenage girls to represent not only Seattle and Washington, but the US. It is the opportunity of a lifetime.

The team will depart December 27, 2014, traveling to Guanghzhou, China for the softball competition. Their schedule will include not just softball games, but opportunities to interface with their hosting community in meaningful ways-- spending one day sightseeing with partnering students from Guangzhou High School, and another sharing stories and time with local kindergarteners. Once the competition is over, the team will travel to Beijing for an historical sights of China tour that will include the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace.

Each participating athlete is responsible for raising $3,295 over the next six months, which will cover airfare, hotels, meals, uniforms and China visas. These four students have agreed to work together as a team, supporting each other’s process and pooling the money they raise so that all four of them can go. This means they need to raise in excess of $9,885 by December.

Washington Cultural Exchange is a non-profit corporation that has been sending athletes abroad for the past 27 years and has been sending a softball team to China for over a decade. One of the major benefits of this history is that the organization has established relationships that allow the traveling American teens more meaningful interactions with the people in the communities they visit. It is not just seeing sites from a tour bus. A former participant from Roosevelt High School said, “The tour with the local Students was amazing. They were so interested in everything about us. It was a blast! It made me realize how much I take for granted.” No students from Garfield High School had been selected until now. It is important that we support Kaela, Emma, and NiRae and get them to China as a first for the Central District and for the Bulldogs.
