Build Tee-Pads for Morrison Park Hood River

In 2019, 72% of Hood River city voters supported the Parks Protection initiative. Today the City of Hood River requires a vote before one of its city parks can be taken from the people who own it. The group Protect Our Parks Hood River proudly helped bring this initiative to the ballot.
But what’s next? Tee Pads in Morrison Park! Outdoor recreation matters to everyone. POP supports the inclusive use of our parks for all people. The open spaces and undeveloped natural urban forests like Morrison Park help cool the environment and support biodiversity. In Morrison Park, people from all backgrounds and ages can walk or play disc golf, a low-cost sport that is easily done with social distancing and almost no equipment.
The Parks & Recreation Department approved building tee-pads for disc golfers. With your help, Protect Our Parks Hood River volunteers will build tee-pads in Morrison Park and remove invasive plants.
Your support will allow volunteers to:
· Build tee-pads to blend into the natural landscape to provide solid and safe footing for players and avoid soil compaction. We're using donated pavers, but buying gravel, sand, and metal frames;
· Purchase metal collars for goals, allowing alternate basket locations for more challenges;
- Continue to purchase insurance covering volunteers working on the project. Although other groups working in various parks have been covered by city or Parks & Rec insurance, Protect Our Parks Hood River has been told to provide our own insurance policy;
· Undertake removal of the invasive blackberry, poison oak, and other non-native species. We’ll replace those plants with native flowering plants and shrubs to enhance the park’s beauty and provide shelter and food to birds. (Volunteers: Are you a native plant specialist? We could use help and advice: email us at [email redacted]). Wood chips around the baskets will reduce muddy spots and soil wear.
Volunteers have already rebuilt the first three tee-pads. By spring, we expect to be done with this phase of the work.
Your donations will help purchase supplies like lumber and gravel, pay for the steel frames needed for the tee-pads, and provide native plants and shrubs.
