After four years of miscarriages, surgeries, fertility treatments, medications, and too many negative tests, we were finally able to carry to term (well nearly). Brit was born via emergency C-section due to complications at 36 weeks. God gave us a special Christmas present this past year; a little boy. After all we have been though, and the challenges he has already overcome, he now needs a medical device to correct his malformed skull.
Our son has a condition called Brachycephaly resulting from both Craniosynostosis and Plagiocephaly. Craniosynostosis is a condition in which one or more of the fibrous sutures in an infant skull prematurely fuses by turning into bone (ossification), thereby changing the growth pattern of the skull. Plagiocephaly, also known as flat head syndrome, is a condition characterized by an asymmetrical distortion (flattening of one side) of the skull. It is characterized by a flat spot on the back or one side of the head caused by remaining in a supine position for too long.
His condition could result in increased intracranial pressure leading possibly to visual impairment, sleeping impairment, eating difficulties, or an impairment of mental development combined with a significant reduction in IQ. He needs a medical device known as a "Doc Band" that will correct how his skull continues to grow, and how all the bones fuse. Otherwise, the malformation will be uncorrectable and Brit will have to live with the medical consequences the rest of his life; or in a worse case scenario we may have to consider surgery.
The only reason we are asking for help; because without it, we cannot get Brit the treatment he needs, and in the time frame in which he needs it. Insurance will not cover it, unfortunately Tricare considers this a cosmetic procedure despite all the difficulties associated with his conditions. The original cost of the treatment was $3800, but we’ve been given a military discount because of the difficulties with Tricare making the new total $2500.
