Bring Art Education to Olympia Schools

Donation protected
What if we had an accessible, affordable teaching artist residency program to revitalize arts education in our school district?

Art Beat Olympia  is bringing art to the elementary schools of OPS through teaching artist residencies.

For the pilot year of 2019-2020, Art Beat Olympia will be at Roosevelt Elementary, a Title 1 school, providing art instruction to all classes and grade levels once a month, for the entire school year. Art Lessons will be 1-hour projects designed to develop fundamental art skills; creative and critical thinking; and foster perseverance. Lessons are based on Washington State Art Standards.  Art materials will also be provided so classroom teachers can continue art-making on their own.

Upon completion of this pilot year, Art Beat Olympia will expand the program by partnering with Olympia Public Schools into additional Title 1 schools. The goal is, in 5 years, ALL elementary schools in Olympia will receive art education.

Why do students need art education?

The power of the art education is well known. Low income students who receive art education are two times likely to graduate college; have a five times lower dropout rate, and score 100 points higher on the SAT. Despite the benefits of art education, art access varies across Washington state because of economic limitations and disparity of priorities. According to Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, ⅓ of elementary students in the state receive less than an hour of art instruction per week.

Olympia Public Schools (OPS) falls within that ⅓. OPS offers art enhancement to select classes through a volunteer docent program. These small steps do not provide an equitable opportunity for ALL students to receive visual art instruction. Access to the docent program is dependent on limited resources in the district. The result is inequitable visual art education in Olympia Public Schools.
