Tarahumara Runners to BTR 2014

Donation protected
Imagine the Born To Run Ultra Marathon weekend in May of 2014 - camping and running and time with the BTR tribe - including running with REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE RARAMURI OF THE COPPER CANYONS OF NORTHERN MEXICO!  This fundraising effort will bring these runners from the canyons to Los Olivos, California, in May - with your help.

This is a sincere gift of support now and in the future for the event's guests from the canyons. If this happens, these young men will have possession of their VISAs and thus their ability to travel as they see fit. In addition to that they will go home with a substantial amount money in their pockets - that money will be given to them - no middle man. From our hands to theirs. This is a true gift of opportunity.

Please read details below from Maria Walton, President/Chair of Norawas de Raramuri:

"A certain intensity to really live came over me. Who knows where or what will be next year. And, I have become obsessed to leave something of sustainable significance behind, simply a message of hope, to create peace and continued sustainability for the Raramuri. If they trust me, I will do all I can to honor them, so that all of us can continue to Run Free." "“ Micah True

On April 1, 2012, I made a promise to Micah, that I would continue to share his dream, the Message of Hope for the Raramuri families of La Sierra Madre. With his death, a voice forever silenced, I've dedicated my mission to reach out to others, that as one, we become the voice of many. Since that day, I've understood the true meaning of family, friendship, sacrifice, and love, with the support of devoted friends, as Luis, Josue, Flint, Michael, Bookis, Keith, Cecy, Mickey, Prospero, Tita, Mas Locos world wide, and our Born To Run Tribal Nation.

The Ultra Maraton Caballo Blanco, continues to grow, with lasting benefits to honor the running traditions of our Raramuri friends. With the support of La Presidencia of Urique, we have formed a harmonious alliance in creating opportunities for the Raramuri runners throughout the world. For the past two years, several athletes have traveled throughout the United States, participating in racing events. Last summer, several Mas Locos and I had the honor of racing side by side with our brothers. It was a pleasant reunion, as we shared memories of Caballo Blanco, stories from our race, gifts, meals, music, and laughter.

Although on many occasions, the Raramuri are shy, they have a deep loyalty to compassionate people from all walks of life. They share a primal awareness, a firm belief that to be a Raramuri, you must have the time to care for each other, and to love people, more than goods. Since traveling to Las Barrancas from 2009, I've embraced their beautiful way of life, a simple law called the Attitude of Humble Silence, which is love, humility, hope and joy. With each visit, my heart yearns to do more, beyond the limitations that Micah once had. Their running traditions, their genuine sense of community, their dreams to provide the best for their family and to have and equal opportunity to travel and compete with runners world- wide humble me.

And, this incredible opportunity begins today! Through Luis Escobar's leadership, and with the assistance of the Director of Tourism, our friend Cecy Villalobos, we have a chance to host a team of Raramuri runners at this year's Born To Run Ultra Marathon.

We have begun a fundraising campaign to raise $4,000 to cover the sponsorship of each runner's VISA, and to reimburse all travel expenses such as gas, transportation, lodging, and meals. The money we raise will also provide to each Raramuri, an appearance fee to generously compensate them for their time away from their families and jobs back home.

The Raramuri look forward to run free with us among the beauty of Los Olivos, May 15-18. They will be camping with us at the Ranch. Their Coach, and our friend, Mario Munoz, will accompany them from Chihuahua. Mario, is the Proprietor of the San Isidro Lodge, and promises to bring authentic, Tarahumara, designed Artisan crafts for sale, as well as hats and shirts from the Ultra Maraton Caballo Blanco race.

The proceeds from the sale of their crafts will be shared among Mario and his team. On Friday, they will participate in the Rarajipare, and on Saturday, Race Day, they will compete with everyone along the course.

Luis and I are thrilled, and deeply honored to share our mountains and trails with our Raramuri friends. We hope you can be a part of this beautiful experience. Born to Run began in 2011, with less than 80 runners, and as with the Ultra Maraton Caballo Blanco, this magical celebration continues to organically grow beyond our wildest dreams. We are reaching out to our friends, and social network, to show the world, that we can make a difference in the lives of all running people.

A Raramuri Shaman once shared a blessing to all runners at a camp side fire in Urique, "Your journey is difficult and hard. But, this is your life. May what your eyes see before you, stay in your heart always."
