Brazil Without Barriers - Volunteer trip

Who am I?

My name is Jaclyn Nemec. I am a 22 year old Korean adoptee raised in New Jersey.  Thanks to my family, I have been fortunate enough to have had an amazing education and life and now it is my turn share it with others.  Throughout my life I've been involved in volunteer  activities, because helping others is what makes me truly happy.

My other passion is capoeira "“ it has changed my life. Capoeira is more than a Brazilian martial art "“ it is history, culture, music and a lifestyle. Capoeira has opened up a new world to me. It has given me courage to face challenges in life and go beyond to do things I didn't imagine possible.

In January 2013, I visited Brazil for a capoeira event and saw first-hand the severe poverty and difficulties children face. I was also touched by the kindness and generosity of the Brazilian people. I want to give back to the community and culture that has helped me in my life.

In 2012, I moved across the country on my own, to Los Angeles after graduating with a BA in Visual Arts from Rutgers University. Even though I'm working seven days a week just to get by, my goal is to give whatever I can to help improve the lives of children in Brazil. I've already started a t-shirt drive for kids in Brazil and now hope to raise funds to help fulfill ABCR's Wish List.

What the Funds are for:
I plan on using the $2,000 to purchase a plane ticket to return to Brazil in November 2013.  I will be teaching English classes and doing volunteer work with the children at ABCR. I also plan to continue practicing capoeira and learning Portuguese while in Brazil.  I'll be delivering t-shirts to children from my t-shirt drive. I want to witness the changes and growth of what can be achieved!

About Brazil Without Barriers

Brazil Without Barriers' mission is to build dreams, transform lives, and increase social and economic equality in Brazil.  Brazil Without Barriers has partnered with ABCR, who operates an outreach center in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.  ABCR offers FREE before and after school classes and activities for children and also offers free enrichment classes for women.  These classes include:

- literacy,

- arts and crafts,

- basketball,

- music (berimbau and guitar),

- capoeira, and

- embroidery.

Since the outreach program opened their doors in May 2009, they've maintained an average of 80-100 students registered for their classes, over 75% of them are children.

Brazil Without Barriers provides international support to ABCR so they can continue operating their outreach center activities, improving life in their community, and creating a more equal society.
