Blue is a beautiful, pure-bred lab I found on December 30th on the corner of a busy street. She had been abandoned and was cold, scared, and slightly injured.
But when I took her home, she warmed up, healed up, and made easy friends with Janie the dog (who can be challenging for other dogs to get to know), Zac and Sacha the cats, and everyone else we've encountered since.
Blue is about 18 months old, vet-checked, vaccinated, spayed, micro-chipped, and ready to adopt. "Sweet, smart, and good enough to be a service dog if we'd had her from puppyhood," said Dr. Cox.
I had lined up a great family to adopt Blue... But we encountered one big monkey wrench...
Dr. Cox discovered a knee issue common in Blue's breed and other large dogs. Blue has already ruptured the ligaments in her right hind knee, leaving her unable to run and play like she'd love to do. The left hind knee is likely to follow suit . In short, she's on the fast track to constant pain and permanent lameness.
The solution? Knee surgery, which as you might imagine, is expensive. At $2k-2.5k per knee times two we're looking at vet bills that will make it nearly impossible to place Blue in a forever-home.
So, I've been working with other animal rescuers, including the adoption counselors at the Athens Area Human Society. We've come up with the "it takes a village" great idea of asking you to help. If we can all pool our resources, whether limited or vast, we can collectively help Blue get her knees fixed so that she can find a forever-home and live a long and healthy life.
This sweet pup has at least 10-12 years worth of love to offer the people she meets and calls family. Won't you help Blue be fully mobile and pain-free?

Any funds that we raise beyond what Blue needs will help the Athens Area Human Society --a no-kill shelter--raise awareness about hard-to-place animals and find forever homes for lots of cats and dogs like Blue.
