I teach 7th grade ELA at Joseph L Block Middle School in East Chicago, IN.
My students are spectacular sunshines who are bound to go far in life. They work hard and persevere in the face of adversity. Not only that, but they are some of the kindest, most thoughtful children I've ever met. They brighten each and everyday.
School City of East Chicago is an underfunded school district 5 miles away from the Illinois state border. 97% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Because we are an Indiana school, my students do not qualify for free admission to the world class museums in Chicago. For many of them, these ticket prices are cost prohibitive.
I've set up this GoFundMe in the hopes that these amazing kids will be afforded the same educational opportunities as their peers across the border. Currently, we are in the process of planning a trip to the Field Museum, to pair with our unit on Native Americans and the importance of learning about and sharing ourselves with others. The entirety of this GoFundMe will be put towards reducing costs for my students. If this goal is exceeded, any leftover funds will be put toward our next field trip.
