Black Girl Live

Donation protected
Fifty percent of Black girls are estimated to be sexually victimized by the age of 18. This is at an epidemic status. The long-term effects are shame, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, early onset sexual activities, teen pregnancy, higher incidents of depression, low self-esteem and expressions of violence. This tends to lead to self-destructive behaviors, unhealthy relationships and an increase in suicide. Black girls are dying emotionally and spiritually in droves.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the third leading cause for death of Black girls ages 10-14 is suicide. This is intersected by a study done by the Black Woman’s Blueprint that estimates that more than 60% of Black girls will be sexually abused by the age of 18. Our intention is to help this population of extremely vulnerable girls to embrace the hope and the future that God has for their lives. We want them to explore their purpose and how they are wonderfully and uniquely made. With that, we believe that hope and purpose will increase their passion and reason for living and decrease their proclivity towards suicidal thoughts and attempts.

A huge reason is the foundation of present and historical sexual trauma from hundreds of years of sexual victimization via slavery. The trauma, secrets and shame of the trauma is destroying Black girls (and their mothers) from the inside out. Couple that with no Black Sexual Assault Advocates in Greater Madison and you have a state of Black women and girls who have a need to heal within the context of their culture, with little to no resources to do so.

The impact of Black girls growing into Black women who select their intimate partners, raise their children and live their lives through the constant veil of unhealed sexual trauma, low self-worth and shame is evident not only in the mental, spiritual and physical health of the Black woman, but also deeply upon our families and community. There is no healing without hope, and no hope without faith. We seek to increase both, as well as help to prevent future abuse via increased awareness and education.

What You Support Means?
Lives saved...
At the end of one of my groups earlier this year, I asked, “What did you receive from being in this group?” A 13 year-old girl replied, “Ms. Gee, do you mean how this group helped us? Well, remember when you were talking about suicide? If it wasn't for this group, I would have killed myself.”

We are so thankful for your help. Any and Every amount helps to get us closer to our goal!
