On Wednesday, January 10th, our good friend Eric Bjur will be having open heart surgery. Here is his story. . .
Eric is married to the love of his life of almost 25 years, JoEllen. They have three children, Brian (22), Paul (20) and Anna (10) who all reside at home. Eric has had 4 stents placed in his heart due to blockage over the last 15 years. This last month while undergoing a stent procedure the doctors determined that the placement of the stent was not possible and he would need to have triple, possibly quadruple, heart bypass surgery. Hoping to put off the surgery mainly due to finances, Eric was told by his cardiologist last week that if he were to have a heart attack it would be fatal, so surgery was scheduled within the week!
Doctors have told Eric that he will be in the hospital for 4-5 days following surgery and then a possible two month recovery at home. Since Eric is the main provider for his family, they are facing certain financial hurdles over the next couple of months. Medical bills not covered by insurance, co-pays and deductions (Open heart surgery typically costs $70,000-$300,000), along with the possiblility of two months off work without pay is quite a stress for this family of five.
