Lemonade for Monica

On February 28, 2014, Monica Pence Barlow, Orioles PR Director, Ellicott City resident, and longtime member of the Baltimore Orioles' extended family, passed away after a 5-year battle with lung cancer. Monica was just 36.
I'm Cole, a 4th-grade Oriole fan who also runs my own lemonade stand in Catonsville, MD, which is near Ellicott City. I go to about 30 Orioles' games a year and travel to see the team when I can get out of school. That's me in the picture from Ed Smith Stadium during Spring Training this year! I consider myself part of the "Orioles Family" too and I was very sad when I heard about Monica. I wanted to do something to help, because I am a huge orioles fan and I like supporting orioles staff and players.
When I was at Spring Training, the Os were all wearing Lungevity shirts during batting practice. I learned that this is the science-based charity that Monica supported for many years. Monica must have loved science. I do too.
On June 7, 2014, I'll be having my first lemonade stand of the summer, from 10 am - 4pm. It's in Catonsville, on Rollingfield Rd. Usually, I buy my own lemons and things, but for this one my parents have agreed to buy all the stuff I need. Every dollar earned that day will be sent to The Lungevity Foundation in Monica's name after June 7th. Please come out and buy some lemonade. I may even make it orange for you!
If you can't make it to Catonsville, please consider making a donation in Monica's honor right through this page. Again, all money (minus the GoFundMe fee) goes directly to Lungevity. You can also just support Lungevity or other cancer causes in your own ways and think of Monica and the Os - that would make me happy too!
While I never met Monica, I know we lost a great person in February. I hope all of us in the Orioles Family will do what we can to support the scientists working to save people in the future. When we do, let's think of Monica.
