Help Big Nate Beat Leukemia

Donation protected
My brother makes a big impact. Wherever he is and whoever he meets, he leaves people better off than before.  Nate is kind, generous, and loves those around him fiercely. He is a son, a brother to me, a friend to all, and an uncle to many more children than just his little nephew Joey.

My brother is Uncle Nate, Moose, Big Nate, Cuz, Naynay, Tan, Uncle Noodle, Mungo, and Bro.

This past week, my brother Nate was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. AML is characterized by an overproduction of immature white blood cells, called myeloblasts or leukaemic blasts. These cells crowd the bone marrow, preventing it from making normal blood cells. They can also spill out into the blood stream and circulate around the body. AML can occur at any age.

Treatment needs to begin soon after AML is diagnosed, as it progresses very quickly. Chemotherapy is the main form of treatment for AML. Initially, the aim of treatment is to destroy leukaemic cells and induce a remission. This means that there is no evidence of leukaemic cells in the blood and bone marrow and that normal blood cell production and normal blood counts are restored. Once a remission has been achieved, more chemotherapy is given in an effort to prevent the leukemia from returning (relapsing). This is called post-remission or consolidation therapy.

On Wednesday March 28, 2018 Nate went to the ER with chest pains and after 5 days of diagnostic testing, on Tuesday April 3, 2018 my brother began his first round of aggressive in-patient chemotherapy to begin treating his leukemia. Nate will spend at a minimum, the next 4 weeks in West Penn Hospitals AHN Cancer Institute leukemia unit to receive his initial treatment.  He will then require maintenance chemotherapy as a routine ongoing effort to prevent the leukemia from returning.

We are creating this page as a place for those who, throughout their lives have been touched by Nathan and feel the positive mark he has left. A place where we can come together in our love for my brother and do something to help with all that is coming in his future and the future of our family.

As many can attest, my brother works hard and always has. His physical strength has been one of his greatest attributes throughout decades of hard labor jobs alongside our father. This disease will take that physical strength from him for a while. Please consider donating to assist with the enormous cost of treatment and the fallout that is sure to come as a result of my larger than life brother being unable to work for the first time since he was 14.  His family and friends have already begun to form the army of support he will so desperately need to win this fight. My brother can beat this leukemia.

Please help us to give him all the tools he could possibly need to finish this job and help us get Nate back to his life as a son, brother, uncle, and friend.
