Mercedes K. McGuire tragically lost her life on August 4, 2017. We lost a generous and giving woman who was a mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, friend, and much more.
I had the pleasure of working with Mercedes who became a friend. I admired her compassion to help others, always thinking of herself last. She always had a smile on her face and was very uplifting to be a round. Lori, Mercedes mother, taught her good ethics and qualities in life one being integrity. She always told on herself if she made a mistake and would never lie to take the easy road out. I will miss the long talks we had about our lives and helping each other through them. Most of all, Mercedes was dedicated to giving the best life she could to her son, Bentley.
Bentley, age 4, will never get over the loss of his mom however; there is something we all can do to help. Lori, his grandmother, will become a huge part of helping Bentley grieve and accept his loss. She will also become a key participant in raising him, which comes with financial stress. This is where we come in; we can make a difference for Bentley by donating and helping with his future.
Death can leave children scared and scarred. However, with support of family, friends and community, they can survive and thrive, learning a resiliency they never knew they had. It is important to help children understand that the goal is not to “get over” what happened, but to move toward acceptance. They will never get over it; the loss of a parent changes a child from that point on.
