Beachland Legal Expense

The Beachland Ballroom and Tavern settled its admission tax issues with the city late last year and we have put a good dent in paying the settlement amount. We are happy to have this issue behind us and are grateful to Cleveland City Council for enacting legislation to reduce the admission tax for small clubs to a more manageable percentage. But the struggle left us with a rather large legal bill.
Some friends in the legal community who are also musicians and music fans have watched us struggle for the last few years through this situation and asked to create an event to help out. So on February 7 they are putting on Raising the Bar, a fundraiser for the Beachland featuring 4 bands made up of members from Cleveland’s legal community. Not only are they donating the $15 admission charge (less tax of course) but are also collecting donations for a silent auction that will include good seats to Browns and Indians games next year, a Les Paul special edition guitar, a Taylor Acoustic guitar, original paintings by Beachland friends Dana Oldfather and Tim Callaghan, and more. We are taking more donations for the auction until the day of the event.
We want to make it clear that the Beachland has successfully survived this rather tough stretch that also included Waterloo Road being torn up for the past few years during construction of a new $5.5 million streetscape. We now have bright new lighting, new parking lots, landscaped and widened sidewalks and the Tower park at the center of Waterloo at E. 156th that is equipped with a small stage for summer concerts. We are very grateful to the City of Cleveland for shepherding this project and to Councilman Mike Polensek and Northeast Shores Development for getting all of the small Waterloo merchants and organizations through the construction.
As the anchor of the street and the inspiration for Waterloo’s rebirth, the Beachland feels an obligation to now lead the way into the future. So as we get ready to celebrate our 15th anniversary in early March, we are making plans and working with our old and new neighbors to expand one of the most vibrant but authentic neighborhoods in Cleveland.
