Basil's Tuition Fund

Donation protected
Basil is now 17 years old.  He was diagnosed with Autism when he was 9 years old, but before that we knew he had special needs.  He required thousands of dollars in therapy, tuition for private school and other supports.  In January of last year, his Psychiatrist added ADHD, OCD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder to this diagnosis.

However, this is not who he is.  He is a talented magician, musician, juggler, dancer and actor.  For the second year in a row, he's won the Poetry Outloud contest and has been invited to the state competition in Lansing.  Because of the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor, Michigan, Basil is thriving.  With the help of his teachers he has discovered the thrill of music and now plays guitar, spoons, bones, ukulele, harmonica, and he is now creating a one-man-band rig.  Additionally, he is succeeding academically with all As and Bs.  He wrote his Junior Thesis in his sophomore year and has become an accomplished performer.  Basil also won the Dean's Cup this year for exemplifying "the values of Character, Honesty and Integrity (and) our quest here at Leelanau to help students learn and grow into their 'best' self."  Basil worked so hard this year, and winning the Dean's Cup shows how much he's grown.

He has had a long road to travel to get to this place because nothing has come easy for him.  Basil has to work very hard to manage being in the world.  He works harder than any kid I know to maintain homeostasis, and then even harder to get good grades, be a friend and live in the world with others. He is successful now because of the Leelanau School.  If he were at a public school, he would manage, but at Leelanau he thrives.

He could never get the support that he needs in a public school setting, and we are so blessed to have Leelanau and his amazing teachers.

The school costs $52,000/year for a five day boarder, but Leelanau has generously offered Basil a scholarship of $20,000.  We want him to continue going to Leelanau for his Junior and Senior years, but we need help.

We need to start raising money now for the 2018-2019 school year, so that Basil is ready to go this Fall.  Please check out the  Leelanau School for more information on this amazing school.
