My name is Courtney.
Some of you may know me and my story but then there are others that don't know anything about me. So to start off I am a 17 year old girl who just lives a normal life and loves to enjoy the little things. On the 25th of November 2017 I will be shaving my hair off to raise money for the Westmead Children's Hospital. I am doing this because when I was about 2 and a half years old my stomach got bloated and my mum (Angela) thought it was weird. So she took me to our GP and he felt my stomach he said he did not think it was a ruptured spleen or twisted bowel ( mum was thinking it was gas in my stomach nothing could prepare her from what she was about to hear ) our GP said "Courtney has a tumour" he told us to go straight to the children hospital where we would meet with the oncologists. The oncologist said "feels like it would be one of two things Neurobladtoma or Wilms tumour." If it was the neuroblastoma I would only have a couple of days to live but if it was Wilm's tumour I would have a 50% chance of living. Within hours I was having blood taken to test, biopsy’s done and doctors would come in and out . Mum knew that our world would become very different from this day on. On Christmas Day I was diagnosed with Wilms tumour. So I then started chemotherapy straight away. The chemotherapy I was having was Vincristine, Doxorubicin and Actinomycin. I had this for 7 weeks then on the 27th of February 2003 I had the operation to remove my kidney and the tumour. Following that I then had another 16 more months of chemotherapy that made me cancer free !
Since then I had many trips back and forth from the hospital for check ups but as time went on less and less trips were made. I now have one a year. This Christmas Eve will be 15 years from the day I was diagnosed so I will be shaving my hair. My mum was there every day during my treatment so she will also be shave her hair to help me raise money.
