*URGENT ASSISTANCE NEEDED*

Late into the night of March 5th, 2015, conscious reggae singer and songwriter, Bala Shine, woke up to what he believed to be a terrible dream:

People screaming... His house was on fire. Next door, his mother's house in flames. Next door to her, his grandmother's house in flames. And next door to her, his aunty's house in flames.

Incredibly, his two children, mother, grandmother, and his aunty's family all made it out safely but only in time to see everything they possessed go up in smoke. Four families homes burnt to the ground, tragically this was no dream.

We look to our community of friends and family to help contribute to this incredibly unfortunate situation we have found ourselves in.

Our urgent goal is to raise emergency funds for his family as soon as possible. Food, clothes, and shelter are the immediate costs that will grow over the coming weeks. The initial goal of $10000 will help with the situation, but the actual cost and its relative goal to rebuild these families homes will expectedly rise as the situation is evaluated.

I will be arriving in the village on April 1st with my family. We will be helping to build a shelter. If we can raise $5000 by the end of this month we should be able help to buy some of the building supplies needed for the shelter. Please contact me if you have questions or are interested in helping in any other way.

*I met Bala Shine back in 2007 through a mentor student of mine, Cito Ybarra. We have worked very closely together every since. He quickly grew to be a brother to me. While he was in Seattle, he helped me and my family on numerous projects outside of our music endeavors. Since his return to Punta Gorda in 2011, I have spent a month every year living with his family, living in their home. Instantly, they took me in as their own, hunting, cooking, and even clothing me. They are truly some of the most giving people I know. Bala Shine asked Valentina and myself to be his children’s godparents on our first stay in the village. I feel a tremendous need too help him and his family to my greatest ability. This incident has shocked their world as it has mine.

**Bala Shine built GoatHouse Production Estudio, a positive and conscious recording facility in the Garifuna village, where the youths came to record their life stories. The facilities were also burnt down in the fire as it was attached to Bala Shine's house.  This is one of the many positive projects that came out of this studio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwPt6lSrY1s
