Bailey Needs New Hair Alopecia Took Hers

Donation protected
This is my daughter Bailey the night of her induction ceremony into the National Junior Honor Society. Bailey's beautiful, smart and very shy. She is also newly diagnosed with Alopecia Areata.

Bailey at the beginning of the 7th grade (below), she will be 13 on July 12th. When she grows up she wants to be a Marine Biologist and her favorite animal is a dolphin. Everything that she does is done with hopes that it will help her succeed in following her dreams. Bailey works hard in school, earning Honor Roll or a 4.0 every quarter, perfect attendance, and Pride awards every assembly. She knows at 12 years old that all of these will look good on her college applications. This amazing young lady is our Bailey Boo!

Bailey's last week of 7th grade. These pictures were taken on the same day I was made aware of Bailey's condition, May 13th, 2014. Bailey has never liked her hair played with or styled, I didn't get many requests from her to do her hair unless it was for a special occasion. I can't even begin to describe the feelings and thoughts that hit me as I moved her hair around, exposing more and more bald spots.

June 19th, 2014
38 days later and her bald spots are not hidable any longer. She is losing so much hair everyday. My husband and I have started trying to prepare Bailey for the inevitable, at this rate she will most likely go into 8th grade completely bald.

We took her to see a Dermatologist who prescribed a liquid topical solution called Clobetasol Propionate. This will hopefully start regrowth from the hair follicles. Unfortunately this treatment is not guaranteed and could take up to a year to see results. Along with the topical scalp treatment we are trying to convince Bailey to undergo injections of steroids into her scalp. You can imagine how reluctant she is to even contemplate this as an option.

How do you prepare a 13 year old girl for this? The thought of what she will endure is breaking our hearts, but the reality of what she is experiencing is shattering her spirit.

My sweet, sensitive Bailey who had perfect attendance all year stayed home from school the last two days before summer break. She was worried that kids at school would notice and make fun of her.

Where there was energy and imagination there is now depression. Bailey has spent her summer hidden away in her bedroom. Most days she doesn't even change out of her pajamas. She has pretty much given up on herself and has lost her will to even try.

I am here asking for help. Help in any way possible. I have been researching children with Alopecia Areata, the wigs that seem to be the best are the ones made from human hair. I think that these wigs or hairpieces would work better for Bailey because they are the most natural looking and hold up better over time. The research I've done shows on average that these human hairpieces can range between 3,000-7,000 a piece. As a parent I want nothing more than to be able to provide everything my girls want and need, but I just don't know how I could even...

I will continue trying every possible resource, and this website was mentioned to me by several people. This plea for help is not for cosmetic reasons or vanity, Bailey will not physically become ill from losing all her hair and she's never been the type to primp (she doesn't wear an ounce of make up or use hair styling products). Our concern is for the decline in her emotional health. The toll on a 13 year old girl who is entering one of the most confusing, hormonal, and self-conscious stages of development is already hard enough to get through unscathed.

Any size donation to help purchase a hairpiece for Bailey would be a gift we could never begin to dream of thanking anyone enough for!

I know this was a long one to read, please know we appreciate                  the time you gave up to get to know our Bailey.
