Baby Brocks Open Heart Journey

Donation protected
Approximately one percent of children are born each year with some form of a heart defect. Of this small percentage, roughly three percent of those children are diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA). In March of 2018, we went for our anatomy scan and were given the news that our son, Brock, was diagnosed with this scary and rare heart defect. As we sat in the exam room trying to digest this news, we were simply devastated. Our little Brock is now 22 gestational weeks and will be born via cesarean section in the beginning of August 2018. Within days of being born, Brock will have to undergo open-heart surgery to save his life.

Every day we ask ourselves, “why him?” “why us?” “what did we do wrong?” but there is never an answer to these endless questions we have. Through this anger, sadness and worry, we are going to fight with love and positivity. Not just for us, but for Brock. We have been sharing our story on social media with our friends and family, updating them through each stage of #BrockStrong's journey. This has been very tough on our family. We have been trying to be strong and raise our 11-month-old little girl with lots of love in the midst of lining up Brock’s team and preparing for these scary months ahead. There will be at least one doctor’s appointment to attend every few weeks leading up to Brocks arrival. Some of our doctor’s appointments will include close follow-ups with our OB, MFM, echocardiograms, Pediatric Cardiologists, Pediatric Cardiac Thoracic Surgeon and our Neonatologist. The list goes on and on. We are very thankful to live in a city like Phoenix, where we have an amazing children’s hospital and experienced team to rally around our strong little man to fix his heart and give him the opportunity to live a healthy and strong life. This is just the start of Brock’s journey and he will have a very tough road ahead of him.

Creating this Go Fund Me account was suggested by multiple friends and family that said they wanted to help and support Brock and our family. This journey is not only going to be an emotional rollercoaster but will be a financial rollercoaster as well. We are lucky to have great insurance, but between Brock’s surgery and monitoring over the next two years, we are looking at an upwards of $30,000 dollars out of pocket. We are staying strong as a family and will do whatever we have to do to fight through this, so that Brock can fight through this heart defect and forever be #BrockStrong.

We will be participating in some awareness walks and fundraisers in the near future. Anyone is welcome to join us! Please watch for details on Facebook, or you can reach out to us directly.

We appreciate any and all support that you have to offer and would love for positive thoughts and prayers to be sent Brocks way.

Much love,
Trevor, Kelsey, Ivory and Brock Swain
