Baby Austins Care Fund

The birth of Austin James Carter, while a joyus occasion, also came with many unexpected events. On Monday April 18th 2016, at a routine 39 week OB check Heather was given news NO parent ever wants to hear. They had seen somethings on the ultrasound that was very concerning and if the baby survived the birth some serious medical interventions would be needed for him in order to live. They were told that Austin had a rare birth defect called Congenital Diapragmatic Hernia (CDH). He would have to be delivered in Boston and admitted immediatly after birth to the intensive care unit at Boston Childrens Hospital. He was born with more than 50% of his diaphram muscle missing and his stomach, intestines and spleen were all in his chest cavity putting much strain on his heart and not leaving room for his lungs to develop properly. He was taken from moms belly at 1:47 am on April 22nd 2016 and immediatly intubated and placed on a ventilator. Mom or Dad were not even able to hold him. He has had surgery to place his organs in the proper place and is now facing a long hard road to recovery. He is not out of the woods yet but he is a little fighter and we have faith he will recover. Although they would never ask, the Carter Family has been placed in a very difficult situation both emotionally and financially. Heather is in Boston staying with the baby as he recovers and James has been back and forth between his wife and very ill child, and home with the other kiddos. With Aiden 5, Rylee 4, and Madison1, all home (besides the  half day preschool a couple days a week for Aiden and Rylee) it is virtually impossible for James to work full time. He is trying to work as much as he can when he is able to have child care but without Heather being home with the kids this is almost impossible. Aside from all the regular bills that come with a household there are also many other expenses added such as travel back and forth to Boston and additional expenses for Heather to be able to stay with Austin as he recovers. Things they never would have expected. Everyone has reached out to ask how they can help during this very difficult time for the family and the best way I can think how is to lessen some of those worries for them. As a grandmother I feel at a loss of how to make this easier for them and this is one way I hope to help.
