Struggling against the confines of the Dressing Room, a Cabaret performer and her accompanist are forced to remember painful details of a shared past, where the norms of gender and sexuality continue to conspire against their decades-long love.

Synopsis
It’s early evening Berlin, circa 1990. Headliner Ursula Stahl is backstage, “at the hour,” preparing for her Cabaret. Tonight, a select audience has been invited behind the scenes to observe, and Ursula accommodates their curiosity and addresses their desire to see it “all come together.”

Ursula’s accompanist, Klaus Kurtzmann, uses the occasion to lead the singer into recollections of a past she’d just as soon forget, a past that began in a pub one Autumn night, in Weimar, 1939. There, Ursula, then a 16-year-old named Werner, sang the iconic Lilli Marlene as Klaus played piano. The rendition was breathtaking and the connection between the two was felt by everyone in the room.

The song became a kiss and the kiss started a fire that would overcome them both. But Ursula could no longer live as Werner, and Klaus, a gay man, couldn’t imagine being with a woman. A tango of denial and frustration takes the pair through the horrors of Buchenwald, into the puzzle of a Miniature Circus in Wiesbaden, then on to Berlin, where a wall would rise to divide not only East from West, but separate the ill-fated lovers as well.

Unable to be together, yet unable to remain apart, a dangerous border crossing from Leipzig to the West in the winter of 1989, throws Klaus and Ursula back into the Dressing Room where they stir the coals of their decades-long desire with the regret, sadness and biting sarcasm that accompanies their love. Petra, Ursula’s Dresser, inhabits a host of characters that reenact the couple’s gnawing history, as she marks time until places. Once the hour is spent and the story told, can the curtain finally rise on the truth?
