BIC Turns 10!

#BIC10 The Boston Interpreters Collective turns 10 this year!

This #GivingTuesday, consider making a contribution to the Boston Interpreters Collective to grow and sustain our language justice work. There is necessary and amazing work being done everywhere, and we are thankful to be among the organizations you support! Our goal is to raise $10,000, one thousand for each year! With your help, we can do it.

Why language justice? Language justice creates spaces that honor people's right to communicate in the languages of their choice and the languages in which they feel most comfortable, so that no one language dominates.  Language justice breaks down power hierarchies by supporting people in organizing and building directly with one another across languages. Imagine the beautiful possibilities!

Language Justice must be part of all Social Justice Work!

The Boston Interpreters Collective began as a volunteer group in response to the need within Boston Public Schools for interpretation services. Since then, BIC has evolved to provide interpretation and translation services for community organizations across Greater Boston as well as developing and hosting popular education workshops on language justice, language access, and interpretation skills.

We strive to keep our services affordable while also ensuring a living wage for our members, who are today mostly women, People of Color, and immigrants. BIC members have interpreted at hundreds of events, including many local multi-day conferences and have established long-term relationships with many local community organizations.

WHAT WILL YOUR CONTRIBUTION SUPPORT?

- Youth Language Justice & Interpreting Workshop: Build capacity among Boston multilingual youth to apply their language skills and lived experience to interpretation and as work opportunity.

- More Interpretation: We strive to build strong and long-standing relationships with local social justice organizations. With your financial support, we can offer interpretation services to even more community-based and grassroots organizations regardless of budget, so that people can organize across languages.

- Interpreting for Multilingual Justice: Offer this foundational annual workshop several times a year to meet demand and support language justice throughout our community. Our goal is two-fold.
1) Offer interpretation services in all high-need languages (our most requested are: Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, ASL, Khmer.) and fulfill every request.
2) Support local organizations build internal language justice and interpretation capacity.

- New Equipment! We need more receivers and transmitters with more channels so that we can support larger events and conferences and interpret in several languages at a time with ease.

- Support of First Admin Role: A project manager will handle requests and key administrative tasks. We want to compensate for the currently unpaid labor that is essential for our work.

- New Trainings such as Trauma-Informed Interpreting. Interpreters become immersed in difficult topics and face secondary trauma. How can interpreters do their work in ways that honor survivors of trauma while also caring for their own health? Building Language Justice Capacity for Organizations: There is opportunity for organizations to grow their language justice capacity. BIC members can support with this important task!
