My name is Neil T. McCabe and I have been a Police Officer with the LIRR/MTA PD for the past 18 years. Nearly 10 years ago my life was dramatically altered when my son Colin was diagnosed with severe autism.
Unable to speak, self-injurious and strong as a bull, Colin presents many challenges but he is happy and well-cared for.
I have custody of Colin and my daughter Olivia chooses to stay with us almost every weekend, leaving the three of us living in a one bedroom rental apartment without cable or internet. As I work the night shift, Colin is under the care of an overnight aide, which costs $100 a night. His diapers cost $100 a week and his prescription medication co-pays are $100 a month, in addition to all the other costs involved with raising a child.
I receive no assitance from any government agency and the cost of his care is not even tax deductible! I also pay alimony and child support for my daughter - $2000 a month.
To address my son's needs and climb out of this fiscal hole, Olivia and I have created an Autistic and Inspired campaign, based on a sketch my daughter drew a few years back. For a donation of *$25 we will send you a tee shirt with our logo screen-printed on the front; for *$40 we will send a logo emblazened coffee mug. However, no donation is too small and any amount you might be able to afford would be appreciated.
