UPDATE: On September 21, our family lost our treasured baby brother, son, grandson, and best friend, Austin in a sudden lost. He had a very unexpected illness that overwhelmed his body. He battled this difficult sickness for more than 31 days. The cause of this illness is still unknown 'til this day and unfortunately will remain a mystery that cannot be solved. We've prayed and prayed for answers, but sadly there are none and the doctors still have no diagnosis. This is a tragic loss and especially losing Austin at only 20 years old, we are devastated. 6 siblings have now turned into 5 and never did we ever imagine life like this. If you were lucky enough to know Austin, he was all the best things in life and brought out the best among us. The pleasure of his company alone would improve your outlook, charging a room with boundless positive energy. In this sense, Austin was a rare person. He did everything right in life. He was driven, motivated, determined, independent, loyal, outgoing, intelligent, adventurous, caring, funny, kind, and he was wise beyond his years. I could go on forever. He was an amazing young man, a determined, valiant athlete and coach with perseverance and strived only to do the best he can 'til his very last breath. Austin was the best brother we could ever wish for, the most perfect son, and the most caring grandson anyone could ever have. He was also the best friend anyone could have in their life. My brother will be forever missed, but never ever forgotten. I know he will carry on with us and will always be a part of us.

On Wednesday, August 22, my brother, Austin Chaolee was at school when he had a sudden seizure in the middle of class. He just had his 20th birthday less than 2 weeks before this happened. It was his first ever seizure. He has no background of any health issues and was extremely healthy as far as we knew.
He was taken by an ambulance to a nearby hospital. He was in the ICU there for 4 days. All of his test results came back normal (CT-Scan, MRI, Lumbar Puncture). In the ICU, Austin had non-stop seizures and even had seizures so constant that he would have them every 10 minutes. It was a very rough time for him. Finally, on the 4th day which felt like an eternity, he was air lifted to UCSF Medical Center.
He is currently in the ICU in critical condition as his seizures still continue and has been unconscious ever since his seizure in class. He has a whole bunch of teams working for him. From neurology, nephrology, pulmonology, ophthalmology, dermatology, to cardiology.... everyone. My brother, Austin is the most kind, sweet, caring, smart, happy and funny kid. He has always been there for me and he has always been a great friend to all of us. Although I know he is strong, he is fighting for his life, his body is taking a toll from being on extreme high doses of medicines. His vitals go up and down. It's a very hard time for him right now; he has endured a lot. The doctors here have gone very aggressive on his medications. He has gone through first and second and now on third line treatment. He is still seizing through all of the suppressants he is on. The doctors have also paralyzed him so that his body doesn't take such a toll when he has his seizures, but he can only be on paralytics for so long, as it is very risky for his future well being.
As of right now, all we know is he has refractory status epilepticus, which means that his seizures still continue despite being on first and second line medications. He started the third line of treatment yesterday. I can't really go into too much details, but the doctors have no idea what is causing this. Austin is an extremely rare, life-threatening case. Him and my family could use all of your support and prayers right now. He has a long journey ahead. We do not know how long he will be in the hospital, when he will be diagnosed, treated, or anything for that matter. This has been the most challenging experience of our lives, but knowing he is loved helps us feel better during this difficult time so thank you to everyone who has reached out. I appreciate you all.
I don't usually post personal things like this or like to ask for help from anyone, but as we are not from San Francisco (although we are staying here for the time being), we will be traveling back and forth quite often, and on top of his medical bills, please consider joining us in making a donation.
