ASHLEYS BICYCLE FUND
I had a bike when I was 17 years old. Didn’t you? Ashley hasn’t had a bike since she was a toddler, and even then, was not able to ride it like her peers. Ashley is now 17 years old and has Rett Syndrome, a genetic disorder commonly found in girls. Rett Syndrome comes with physical disabilities that include limited mobility of the hands, legs, and other coordination movements that we all take for granted.
We have always tried to give Ashley every opportunity to do things ‘typical’ children do – including riding a bike -- trying several different types of tricycles with handles to push her; however, due to her physical disabilities and her long legs (too long for tricycles), we saw our efforts weren’t working and came to realize that Ashley would not know the joy of riding a bicycle.
Then and today, Ashley watches the children in our neighborhood riding their bikes and we can see that she really would like to enjoy that feeling on a bike too. Recently, we’ve gone camping and others were bike riding, but Ashley couldn’t (so, we couldn’t either). We often think.. How nice it would be to have a family bike ride.
A few weeks ago we saw an online ad for a Duet Tandem Wheelchair Bicycle that would be demonstrated at an expo close to home. On Sunday June 29, 2014 we took Ashley to try this bicycle and as you can see by the pictures we took -- she absolutely loved it! Her excitement reflects her enjoyment of riding a bike. Finally, we found an option to include Ashley, in an activity that our entire family could enjoy.
Finding a bike was the easy part, compared to what I need to say next. The cost of this bicycle is $5,000 (plus $500 in shipping costs). As you may know, the cost of any equipment for disabilities is automatically inflated, due to the customization it requires and the demand of such items is lower than mainstream products.
The absolute most difficult part of this is that…I need help. I hate asking for help. BUT, I’m never afraid to do what I need to do for Ashley. It’s not easy for me to ask for help from my family and friends - and people I may not know. However, I know Ashley deserves this one activity that she has proven to enjoy. So, I’m asking for your help. I ask you to please donate any amount you are able to for Ashley’s bike.
Ashley, our family and I would be completely appreciative of your donations. Donations made through gofundme will come to us 7.9% less their fee. Therefore, if you would like, feel free to mail donations payable to me, Sheila Scott. We are not looking for anymore than what this bike will cost us.
