Aryn's Rescue

Did you know that approximately 1 in 88 children have autism? The rate is even higher in boys, about 1 in 54.

So chances are you know someone who has autism or is directly involved with someone with autism.

And if not, then you do now:

For those of you who do not know, our son Aryn was diagnosed with autism. Aryn was born on May 27, 2003 a Normal loving little boy very patient until he was 18 months old. He Had a Grand Mal seizure, 6 hours later had another one and stopped breathing. Then at 2 years old His seizure caused his right eye to become lazy and has required him to wear glasses after this episode. He now has a permanent Lazy Eye. Sleep became an issue as the seizures continued but the doctors wanted to get the seizures under control before they started working on his sleep habits. After sleep meds were introduced Seizures continued but at least sleep was happening more than it was. By the time he was 3 he was introduced to a Neurologist and Phychiatrist and was then diagnosed with ADHD on top of his Autism. Then he was given Ritalin along with all of the other medications that were required for seizures and sleep. When we went into public people starred thinking I was a bad mom because my child was hyper and mean. There was not a lot of education out there and it was difficult to watch people stare and not understand. We then moved to Texas in 2008 Where we were told by many doctors that our son had "too Many Problems" therefore they did not want to take on that liability. He then had a seizure so bad we were transported to Children's and admitted for 3 days. They helped me find a wonderful pediatrician that I have to this day. Seizures now affect his facial area to where He can not talk or swallow or eat during some of these episodes. We just had an episode that lasted for two days and Sign Language would be a huge help to be able to communicate with him but that is going to be an added expense for his health care that is not covered by insurance. My son can not read or write. He is at a prechool level at the age of 10. He can trace his name and copy letters. His reading is by words with pictures only.
Aryn is such a joy to us and we believe God has a purpose and plan for him and our family. We value your love, support, and prayers!

We have learned a lot since we began our autism journey. Here are few things we have learned:
Autism is a "neurodevelopmental" disorder, which affects how information is processed in the brain. It is a "spectrum disorder" meaning it affects each person in different ways, and can range from very mild to severe.

Early identification and early intervention are key because certain developmental skills must be learned during critical periods of brain development.
There is no "cure" for autism but advances in treatment continue to be made. One therapy that has been shown to be effective for many children with autism is applied behavioral analysis (ABA). ABA is considered an evidence-based "best" practice treatment by the US Surgeon General and by the American Psychological Association. "Evidence based" means that ABA has passed scientific tests of its usefulness, quality, and effectiveness. ABA is an ordered, sequenced approach to learning that can be measured and quantified. It is based on the science of understanding the laws by which environmental events influence and change behavior.

Please consider helping us fund this life changing therapy. Want to do more... Contact your elected officials and ask them to support legislation for insurance for autism. Tell them we want autism insurance coverage in all health plans in all 50 states. SC and VA have both passed laws requiring insurance coverage for autism. Geography shouldn't determine whether a person with autism has access to the therapy they need. Help every child with autism reach his or her fullest potential! Want to learn more about autism?
