Artmongering in The Gambia

WHAT DO WE DO?
At Artmongers we love to create moments of joy and connection. In May we are going to The Gambia to work with a primary school and its community to work with the children to create an artwork to improve the school environment
and with the women in the community to strengthen connections.

We have been working with Syrian refugees in Jordan and now we want to spread our ideas to more places.

We arrive with a proven process and open hearts and minds to see and feel what is happening in this new location.

WHO ARE WE?
Artmongers is a not for profit company (reg no 05073194) and was founded by Patricio Forrester in 2003. Since then we have worked in London, Argentina, Azerbaijan and Jordan to turn dead spaces into live spaces, uplift people and create a sense of place. We love to introduce art in adversity. Catherine Shovlin joined in 2011 bringing social research and colour psychology into the mix.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE GAMBIA?
This project will benefit the children in the school and their families. We have been in contact with the head of the school for several years and are thrilled to be doing this with them now.

We will do two main activities. One is to do workshops with the children and co-create an artwork for the school. The second is to work with the mothers of the children to teach them how to carry our Hope Circles to build connections and resilience in their community.

We will also carry out wellbeing research before and after the project.

THE BUDGET
It is a very low budget project (£3000) because we want to operate on a shoe string. We have secured free accommodation (donation in kind). The budget is for travel to Banjul, materials for the project (mostly paint) and carrying out the project. We are gathering donations in kind from our local community as requested by the school for 4-6 year old children (exercise books, pens, clothes, story books, footballs and an unwanted laptop - if you have any of these please contact us).

THE BIGGER PICTURE
As well as being a great project in its own right, this expansion of some of the ideas we have developed in the refugee camp, using the same evaluation measurement of impact on well being, will help us build our body of evidence so we can expand further and help more people. We have some good local connections with other NGOs and the British consulate in The Gambia.

We'd love it if you could support us - not just for the funding but also your belief in this approach, that energising communities is a positive approach for all.
