Pourquoi ce projet ?
La tisane d'Artemisia annua est un traitement bien connu en Afrique contre le paludisme. Elle a également été utilisée dans le protocole chinois de lutte contre la Covid-19, dès janvier 2020.
Le 4 mai, l'OMS a déclaré l'Artemisia annua comme un des traitements possibles de la Covid-19, à condition que son efficacité soit confirmée scientifiquement, pour garantir la sécurité des populations (communiqué du 4 mai 2020).
Mais les financements tardent.
Il est urgent de donner les moyens aux chercheurs et médecins africains pour développer leur propre riposte à l'épidémie, comme l'Europe tente de le faire avec son projet de recherche Discovery.
Comment ça marche ?
150.000 € : budget nécessaire pour démarrer un essai clinique dans un centre de recherche africain.
2 millions € : budget pour mener un essai clinique multicentrique, probablement en RDC, piloté par le Dr Jérôme Munyangi (membre du Conseil d'Administration de La Maison de l'Artemisia), avec d'autres équipes de recherches de pays africains notamment du Sénégal. L'essai testera l'efficacité du traitement et les conditions de garantie de sécurité des populations.
En quelques mois, on pourra savoir si l'Artemisia est un espoir pour l'Afrique. Un traitement efficace, issu d'une plante qui pousse sur le continent, disponible et peu chère.
Dans l'hypothèse où il resterait de l'argent sur la cagnotte à la fin de la crise du Covid-19, #ArtemisiaForAfrica investira les sommes restantes dans la recherche sur les différentes espèces d'Artemisia contre d'autres pathologies, dont le paludisme.

Qui sommes-nous?
Le collectif #ArtemisiaForAfrica est coordonné par La Maison de l'Artemisia , association humanitaire française de lutte contre le paludisme par les Artemisia annua et afra, à destination des populations les plus vulnérables du Sud.
Elle a deux missions :
- accélérer les recherches sur la tisane d’Artemisia, traitement ancestral contre le paludisme
- encadrer sa diffusion raisonnée dans les pays impaludés. Les Maisons de l’Artemisia, pôles de compétences locaux, coordonnent la connaissance et la diffusion de la plante.
Les fonds récoltés seront intégralement employés au bénéfice de la recherche en Afrique.

Why this project?
Artemisia annua herbal tea is a well-known treatment in Africa for malaria which has also been used since January 2020 in the Chinese protocol in the fight against COVID-19.
On 4 May, the WHO declared Artemisia annua one of the possible treatments for COVID-19, provided that its effectiveness is scientifically confirmed to ensure the safety of populations (press release 4 May 2020 ).
But funding is slow to come.
Africa must give its researchers and doctors the means to develop its own response to the epidemic, in the same way as Europe is aiming to do with its Discovery research project.
How does it work?
€150,000 is the budget needed immediately to start a clinical trial in an African research centre.
€2 million is the budget needed to carry out a multi-centre clinical trial, probably in DRC, led by Dr Jérôme Munyangi with other research teams from African countries, notably Senegal. The trial will test the effectiveness of the treatment and the conditions under which it guarantees the safety of the populations.
In just a few months, we will be able to know if Artemisia can bring hope for Africa. An effective, readily available and inexpensive treatment derived from a plant that grows on the continent.
In the event that any funds remain at the end of the COVID-19 crisis, #ArtemisiaForAfrica will invest the total remaining balance in research on different species of Artemisia used to treat other diseases including malaria.
