A memorial for a unicorn

Donation protected
People say that unicorns are nothing more than a myth. I assumed as much until I met Arkadia.
I had been approved to adopt one of 15 PMU foals brought down from North Dakota. For those of you who don't know what a PMU foal is, they used to make the menopause hormone drug "Premarin" from pregnant mare urine. They would breed draft mares and collect the urine to extract the hormone. The foals were just a byproduct. They would wean the foal, send it to slaughter, and breed the mare again. As light was shed on this practice, more desirable  horses started being bred, and rescues created adoption programs to save these babies. Arkadia was one of these byproducts. They had her and two other 5 month olds picked out for my options...I was leaning toward a little paint colt when Arkadia stood straight up, arched her neck, and gave me a sassy look across the lot. Another family was looking at her as well, but I said nope, that's the one. She looked a bit like a blue eyed Sicilian donkey at that point, but I was in love.
A friend brought her down to Savannah for me, and we had to herd her onto (and off of) the trailer, as she had not been handled by people aside from shots and an identifying band on her leg.
She was the sweetest, easiest horse I have had the pleasure of working with. We went from a wild horse to a pretty well adjusted horse. I had her for ten years. We showed, trail rode, led plantation rides, and gave lessons. I was the first on her back as well as the last.
November 18, 2013, after a long and difficult night with the vet, I lost my unicorn to colic. It was the hardest decision I have ever made to let her go, but it was right. Unfortunately, we do still have some vet bills and expenses to cover. I'm paying what I can when I can, but the total amounts to about $1800.  Any bit helps and will go straight into paying the vet and her old boarding stable.  In thanks for your donation, if you provide a color scheme, I will provide a hand created token of appreciation. Thank you for your support.
Anything above and beyond the bills will be donated to a horse rescue.
