Hello, I have lived in West Town, Chicago, for more than 16 years and have come to appreciate my community, including the neighborhood institution, D'Amato's Bakery.

On 9 August, we lost a neighbor and D'Amato's baker for more than 20 years: Aristeo "Pascual" Soriano, age 49 years.

"CHICAGO -- Friends and loved ones are grieving the loss a kindhearted family man who worked at a bakery in the West Town community.
"Aristeo 'Pascual' Soriano, 49, may have been the victim of an armed robbery. A gunman opened fire early this morning near the 1300 block of West Huron Street, killing Soriano.
"The victim's friends and loved ones are outraged that a gunman took the life of such an honest, hardworking man.
"Soriano was a grandfather, and a father to four children.
"He had stopped at a friend's house around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday and was on his way home when the gunman inexplicably opened fire.
"Soriano was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"Soriano worked at the nearby D'Amato Bakery for 20 years. He worked the overnight baking shift from 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., walking the same route to and from work every day.
"If you have any information you are asked to call Area Central police."
Aristeo leaves behind his wife and family of four children as well as his parents in Mexico.

UPDATED on 11 August: During the evening of 10 August, I met with members of Aristeo's immediate family, including: his wife, Amelia; his son, Anastacio; his son, Pasqual; and Pasqual's wife, Jasmine Gallegos. (For more details, see "Update 4" on this page.) Due to GoFundMe's beneficiary policies, the family designated Aristeo's daughter-in-law, Jasmine, as the beneficiary. All of the funds from your donations will directly benefit Aristeo's immediate family.

I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in the State of Illinois and resident of West Town near Grand Avenue. My husband, dogs and I greatly enjoy our neighborhood and community. From the days of Grand Slam (Video) when Tootsie nearly gave away the contents of her apartment to help students at Santa Maria Addolorata to now, our neighborhood is know for its sense of community and generosity.
