Helping our friend Antonio

Donation protected
My dad, Jerry,  is a buffet loving good-old-boy from Alabama (I say this in the most loving way). Twenty-five years ago, he met his best friend Antonio Henandez, where else, but at the Golden Corral. Antonio was working there at the time and would give Jerry first dibs on the collards and fried chicken coming hot out of the kitchen. They became fast friends, and the rest is history.

For the past twenty-five years, our families have been intertwined, celebrating birthdays and life events, and spending holidays together. When Antonio was unable to get back to Mexico to attend his cousin's wedding, he sent Jerry in his place. The gringo standing in for the Mexican (their words not mine). It was a sight to see.

Antonio has spent the last 22 years as a self-employed handy-man in the Hoover area, serving many by doing yard work, carpentry and odd jobs. Great reviews on Next Door keep him busy, and if you know him personally, you will know it is not an exaggeration when I say he is truly one of the nicest and hardworking people around.

Unfortunately, Antonio finds himself in the very tough situation of being uninsured. Last week he fell and broke some ribs, which puts him out of work for a while.  But worst, while in the hospital, his kidneys began failing. He has a relative who is a match and a willing kidney donor. We are desperately trying to figure out a way for the transplant to happen given his lack of insurance. (If you or someone you know has any information or advice that might help us, please message us!)

In the meantime, we're trying to help Antonio and his son, Lediman (an excellent student at Hoover High), make it for the next few months without worry. That entails covering rent, food and few prescriptions  - which totals about $1,500 a month. We've got this month covered, but could really use a helping hand from anyone and everyone who might feel any compassion for folks like Antonio.  If you know Jerry and want to give directly, please feel free to write a check to "Antonio Hernandez" and give it to Jerry. He will make sure to get it to Antonio.

On behalf of both our families, we thank you and are grateful for any amount you can give.
