Antonia Castro Funeral & Expenses

Antonia Degracia Castro of Talofofo, Guam passed away suddenly while visiting family in Austin, Texas.

She will be returning to Guam for memorial services and burial.

The family of Antonia has started a GoFundMe campaign to assist in the transport, memorial, burial and related expenses.

Antonia was the daughter of Manuel Borja Degracia and Dolores Taitano Tolentino. Antonia was born in 1937 in the village of Sumay and was the youngest of nine children.

After World War II the family relocated to Santa Rita and finally Talofofo in 1954.

She was married to Juan Pablo Castro in 1957. Antonia was a graduate of George Washington High School and the University of Guam.

She was an elementary teacher and joined the Chamorro Studies Division as a school program consultant for the bilingual, bicultural program. She authored several books for the Chamorro Studies Division in addition to an autobiographical book about her experiences and internment during World War II.


Antonia was well known for her expertise in traditional herbal medicines and crafts and was a tireless advocate for the preservation of Chamorro culture.


Antonia is survived by her children Gloria Taitano, Louise Santos, Zeta Atoigue, Viola Castro, Hilda Jones and Douglas Castro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan and son, Richard.
