A few weeks ago my cousin's son was a passenger in a horrific automobile accident which has left him currently paralyzed. Anthony is only 20 years old, an athlete, takes great care of his body and has a bright future ahead of him. Imagine being his mother arriving at the emergency room of the hospital and being told the doctors don't know if her son would be a lying down quadriplegic or a sitting up quadriplegic. This family's life just went from light to darkness overnight. The insurance company was eager to save money and give up on Anthony by having him transported to an assisted living facility or general rehabilitation center as soon as possible. But his mom put up a fight. She was in touch with Craig Hospital. Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado is a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital that exclusively specializes in the neuro-rehabilitation and research of patients with spinal cord injuries. Craig evaluates and pre-approves their patients and does not accept anyone they don't completely believe they can rehabilitate to restore some quality of life and empower their patients with as much independence as possible. Within 10 days, Anthony was flown to Craig Hospital.

Anthony had saved some money and was just recently approved for a loan to buy a home and was actively looking. He had one more year of school to become certified for heating and cooling. He will be 21 in September and would be eligible to become an engineer at his employment and have doubled his pay. As his mom said, "He was focused and on track to be very independent. Now that's a long way off." Even with insurance, there are going to be extraordinary expenses ahead. My own son is just 3 weeks younger than Anthony and this story breaks my heart. I'm sure any parent can relate to the pain and helplessness of this tragic situation.
