Anushka Michailova Meml Award & Funeral

Anouchka Mihaylova was a beloved mother, wife and UC San Diego research scientist. On May 17, 2014 she was taken away suddenly and tragically.
My mom, "Ani," and my dad, "Velin", were discussing their life plans while walking to their favorite restaurant in Rancho Bernardo. They were a block away from getting to the restaurant when a car jumped the sidewalk and struck my mother. She was killed on the spot.
My mom was the moral compass of our family. Her death is not only a loss for my dad and I, but to the community as a whole. With her passing, her bioengineering research contributions die as well. Her research was centered on the heart, and all the people who would have benefited directly and indirectly from her research, will be affected. Scientists are like fine wine, they get better as they get older, and she was in her prime. She was an avid walker, traveler and enthusiastic researcher. She had many publications with various citations in her field, under Anushka Michailova, the spelling she used in her scientific papers.
We humbly ask you to donate, to kick-start the Anushka Michailova Memorial Award, a perpetual annual award for UCSD Bioengineering students, which is being established in my mom’s memory. This award will be a catalyst to inspire undergraduate students to pursue research positions in the bioengineering field. A small portion of the funds will be used to cover the funeral cost, as her passing was unexpected.
