Andrew Thomas is my cousin, he is 24 years old and lives in Cawston, B.C. His parents are Suzanne & George Thomas & his sister Kim.
On March 13th, 2016 Andrew was admitted to Penticton Hospital with liver failure, and his condition was quite grave. He was flown to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), where a battery of test & biopsies revealed he has a rare form of Congenital Liver Fibrosis. 1 in 20,000 people get this disease. It is not curable because it destroys the liver by creating a hardened mass of scar tissue throughout the liver. The disease would have started after birth and slowly advanced unknowingly over the years until early adulthood, which is when the symptoms started surfacing. Andrew was immediately placed on a liver transplant list, with his condition is obviously quite critical.
Andrew has just recently received his liver transplant, however his recovery will be approx one year, with the first 3-6 months being the most crucial. Medication costs are going to be high, as a lot of these are not covered by medical & he does not have extended benefits. The estimate is approximately $3,000 per month.
We all know the emotional strain that is felt by everyone when their loved ones are critically ill, as well as the subsequent financial strain when weeks are taken off work. We are asking for any donations to lessen the financial impact for Andrews pafrents George & Suzanne, and his sister Kim, so that they can be by Andrewʼs side, supporting him & supporting each other through this difficult time.
The family will be living in Vancouver during Andrews recovery and will have additional living cost such as food & hotel, so again whatever you're able to spare would mean the world to them.
