Hello folks, my name is Winston Hunter. If you know me will know that this is an extremely difficult and drastic step for me to take.
However, as a result of recent health and employment setbacks I need to ask for help in avoiding eviction from my home of 30 years. I am scrambling to raise money by selling personal items, and applying and interviewing for jobs. But these efforts on their own may not be enough to meet deadlines to pay rent arrears this week and two weeks from now. I am hoping to raise enough to help meet these deadlines while I continue to work towards regaining self-sufficiency.
Earlier this year, I lost my job as a healthcare administrator when the practice closed unexpectedly. Since then I have applied for many jobs - I have experience in several different fields - but to my surprise and disappointment have not yet been made an offer.
My situation has been complicated by the effects of two health issues. One is a functional disability caused by procedures I had following a cancer diagnosis several years ago. The other is an inflammatory disease that causes pain and exhaustion; it flared up after I lost my job and has persisted until the present. I fight to stay on top of these conditions but they cause restrictions in my activity and tend to drain strength as well as savings.
Over the summer I fell behind in my rent and in September my landlord filed a petition to evict me. I have been able to make some payments since then, and last week the court granted me a second extension of time to pay the arrears in installments. However I was told that it is unlikely I will be given another extension should I fail to meet the agreed deadlines. At present, I owe a total of $8,000, and must make a payment of $2,000 this week.
If I do end up losing my apartment, I will be homeless as I haven't the means to rent another. My best hope would be that any funds raised might be enough to allow me to put some belongings in storage for a while as I try to claw back to normality. I hope to be able to stay in New York, land a job, work hard to rebuild my standing, and repay the friends who have helped me.
I realize that my situation pales in comparison with those of so many in the USA and around the world in these times. I see so many gofundme campaigns that are worthier than mine. Please know that I will be profoundly and undyingly grateful to anyone who can lend a hand, that I intend to do my utmost to repay each and every one of you. And if and when my health and well-being are back to normal, I intend to do everything I can to contribute to others in need on gofundme.
