It has been brought to my attention that my will for independence has lead to confusion over my campaign and why I require assistance. As a brief, I am a 29 year old woman who uses an electric wheelchair due to my physical disability (I have no arms and only the lower half of my left leg). I do not say this to bring sympathy or pity, these are just realities of my everyday life. I work full time, I have friends and socialize but not having the ability to drive increases my reliance on others
Story
How do you get to work? How do you get to a friends house? How do you go on holiday? How do you go to buy food? How do you get home on a late Saturday night after the movies and it's pouring rain?
For some of you, the answer will be by public transport and that's a choice, the majority of you would say driving and that's a choice. Many take this choice for granted, however those of us who are restricted by physical disability are limited with standardized vehicle options.
As much as I love Sydney and have been using public transport to get around for the past five years, with the increase of my workload, study and social life it is being increasingly more complex to allow for the additional travel time.
At the moment, I am either catching trains, taxis or relying on friends and family to transport me in my van as I am unable to drive. Although my wheelchair can take me to train stations etc. it cannot protect me from the elements and I'm getting to the point where turning up to work or formal occasions looking like a drowned rat is not something that can be laughed off.
This brings me to the punch line. Ever since I was a child, one of my biggest dreams is to be as independent as possible. When my friends and family all reached 16 and started to get their L plates I began to see a line of independence that could not be breached.
In the passed 14 years there has been significant technological advancements that mean driving is now more than just a dream. Currently the Australian Government are unable to fund such an endeavor and I'm seeking your assistance to make this dream a reality. For a car that can receive the appropriate modifications plus the technology the total cost will come to approx. $120000.00
To be able to just jump in a car and drive to work, my parents, friends or just being the designated driver on a busy Friday night, these are all choices that we make on a daily basis and I would like to have the option to make the same choices. Even just the thought makes my heart sing
