Help Amanda Study Abroad - Spain Summer 2012

Donation protected
**Due to lack of funding I've decided to switch from the 8-week program to the 6-week program which lowers the cost to $6,900.

My name is Amanda Marie Mayers, I'm currently a junior at Western Washington University getting my degree in Art Education with a minor (possibly major) in Spanish.

I have already been accepted into the study abroad program at the University of Salamanca for 8 weeks during the months of July and August 2012. This is a well known program that has been led by Seattle Pacific University history professor, Alberto Ferreiro, for the last 23 years.

I will be travelling with a group of approximately 30 other WWU and SPU students as well as two WWU faculty in addition to Alberto. The main focus of this trip is to submerge ourselves in the Spanish language and culture. We will have Spanish class everyday plus an additional history or literature class of our choice.

Here is the link to the University of Salamanca's website where you will find information about the university, testimonials, cost, program description, pictures, course descriptions etc.

I qualify for financial aid during the academic school year (Sep-June) and my Expected Family Contribution is 0. I receive grants from the government every year, and for the 2011-2012 year I was also awarded an art scholarship. The issue with this summer is that grants through financial aid are not available for summer courses.

I want to go on this trip more than anything, so many opportunities have passed by because I was unable to afford them and I'm determined to break that cycle.
I'm trying to raise enough for the cost of tuition and fees which, as shown on the website, for 8 weeks is $8,400. I work two part-time jobs on campus, one as an Ethnic Student Center office assistant, the other as a Special Events Office student ambassador, enabling me to pay for my flight and personal expenses.

My goal to become a high school art teacher in a low-income, high-risk school, can be greatly aided by becoming fluent in Spanish. Sitting in a classroom five days a week for 50 minutes is not going to get me much closer to that goal. I chose the 8-week program instead of the 4 or 6 weeks because this will likely be my only chance to study abroad while I'm in school and I intend on making the most of it. I want to be pushed outside my comfort zone and challenged to go beyond what I would learn in the classroom.

If you or anyone you know is able to help, I would be incredibly grateful and privileged to be given this opportunity. If you have any questions at all PLEASE feel free to e-mail me at: [email redacted].edu

I'd like to thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide, even if it's just passing this along.

Thank you!

Amanda :]

**Also, if it's any incentive, you can think of it as a birthday gift as I will be in Spain from June 28th-August 13th and my birthday is June 30th :]

Thanks again! :]]
