Amanda Hoeland's Medical Expenses

Amanda suffers from a rare chromosomal disorder in which a portion of her 18th chromosome is missing. In a nutshell this disorder has left Amanda with many medical issues and wheelchair bound. Amanda must also wear orthotics and a supportive back brace (which are not completely covered by insurance) due to a 76° curvature of her spine. Amanda also suffers from a primary immune deficiency as a result of her disorder. This means her immune system is extremely weakened. Her body does not produce enough immunoglobulin (IgG) which functions against bacteria and some viruses. When Amanda gets an infection the symptoms and duration are more severe than a person with a normal immune system. In order to help strengthen Amanda's immune system, she receives monthly intravenous immunoglobulin infusions or IVIG administered by a registered nurse that visits her home. There are side effects associated with this IVIG and managed by the registered nurse as they arise. This is a stressful day for Amanda and her family, but all in all Amanda's health has greatly improved over the years due to these infusions. She still gets infections but due to the monthly treatments the duration and severity of these infections has decreased.  

Amanda's  disabilities and chronic illness have affected the entire Hoeland family. There is always increased worry, stress and sleepless nights. Unfortunately there is a huge stress placed on the family due to the financial burden of medical expenses. The Hoeland's never complain about caring for Amanda and only ever show her a very special and unconditional love.
