Ali's Hillside Wheelchair Ramp

For those of you who don’t know my smiling, sassy, songbird sister Ali, you’re missing out! She is one of those mystifying people you just can’t help but envy (that is until you fall in love with her). You meet her and know instantly she is super special. You’re sure she’s destined for Hollywood, you fall under her spell and just try to cling onto some of the golden vibrations that bounce off her!

Ali has made it to L.A. but hit a massive speed bump on her way to meeting her creative destiny. She is in desperate need of a ramp. Yes you read that. A RAMP. If you are curious what a gorgeous siren would need with something so utilitarian, please read on.

Ali was diagnosed with Diabetes type 1 at 18 and has suddenly been hit with very rare and dire complications from this as$hole illness.

Pardon my profanity but desperate times call for real talk. Ali is not letting this Diabetes take her down. This tough-as-nails warrior woman is not falling for this bulls%it. We were born and raised in Texas after all. You just don't mess with Texans. Ali is tenacious, to her CORE! Buckets and buckets of tenacity. Her strength, and the support of our parents are sustaining her.

Diabetes has taken her legs from her (for now) because of a rare complication that only occurs to 1% of diabetics (Charcot foot). The bones in her feet are literally as fragile as glass and shatter if she walks on them. But she's still smiling, singing and (now) blogging. If this weren’t enough, Diabetes is now threatening to take her sight away. The only thing more gorgeous than this woman’s soul is the special way she sees the world.

Eye surgery is scheduled for this Friday. Prayers/positive thoughts please! This active, lively yogi suddenly cannot walk or see well but she has a get-up-and-go attitude.

Ali lives in a 100-year old house —with halls too narrow for her wheelchair (so she crawls around wearing gardening pads on her knees …with two dogs, the chance of a tail in the mouth is 100%). The house is on a hillside on the top of a mountain. It is impossible for her to leave the house on her own. My Dad has to carry her (and her wheelchair) up and down steep stairs, just to get to the road. Or she crawls.

A hillside ramp will be a big project, but if we can do it, it will provide her with some relief and independence again.

Ali brightens even the darkest room, except the only room she’s brightening right now is her own, which is a crime.

I admire my sister for choosing joy always. And for loving the small things… ocean breezes, singing, vivid storytelling, gardening, morning tea, her puppies, gaming (she’s one of the cool ones folks), Mexican food, breakfast burritos, queso, life’s ironies.… I love people who can laugh at themselves. She does this better than anyone. Please help in any way you can to keep this girl rolling (not crawling!) and smiling out in the world not just stuck on the mountain.

We aim to begin work on a ramp in at least two months time. Any small amount will be so, so appreciated, and if you have a free moment, please pop over to her blog www.thegirlwithglassfeet.com and leave her some words of encouragement.

She would love to hear from you.
