Alison & Bailey Fire Relief Fund

On Friday, August 18, 2017 at 11am my apartment burnt down. It was an electrical fire that started in my roommate's room and I am still waiting for the fire report to get answers. Fortunately, all the people and pups made it out ok. My dog and I were home asleep when my roommate came in screaming that her bed was on fire. I scooped up Bailey (my dog) and had him in my arms the whole time, but left the house without even my shoes on.

The fire department came instantly but the fire spread fast. Half the apartment is burnt to a crisp and the other half is completely damaged by smoke and soot. The smell is horrifically toxic. I've lived in my apartment for over 11 years and I've collected a lot of really nice things. I also had a lot of memorabilia in there from my childhood. It was beautifully decorated and I also have lovely clothing, books, and a huge number of items that I will never be able to recover. I have renter's insurance but it barely covers anything. Starting all over from scratch is costly and overwhelming.

Bailey and I need a place to live for the year that my place is being rebuilt. My insurance company will only cover $3500 total (!) for "displacement" for the year-ish that we are displaced.

It is so uncomfortable for me to ask for anything. Truly-- I love opening my home to people and am frequently giving boxes of clothing away. It is beyond humbling to be on the other side of things. I am forever grateful that everyone made it out okay and that Bailey and I are safe. I know we are strong and we will be okay. I also know that my home of San Francisco is an incredibly expensive city.

Part of this is also for financial help to be able to live in the city for a year, as I've had rent control for over a decade in San Francisco. People keep suggesting that I do a GoFundMe so here I am, hoping to start somewhere. Even the smallest contribution will make a difference.

Wow-- this is one of the most difficult and humbling things I've ever done, and I'm nervous as hell, but okay, here goes...!
