Al-Mahata Syrian Refugee Project

It's a reality that is becoming clearer every day--the Middle East is in trouble. The latest manifestation of this has been in the nation of Iraq, where a quick expansion of the brutal civil war in neighboring Syria has killed over 80,000, many of whom were women and children, and cast over 2.5 million refugees into a world that is unable to offer them even the assurance of their next meal, or the promise of safety of any friends or family still in Syria.   As nearly one-third of these have fled to neighboring Jordan, the Jordanian government and the UN humanitarian forces there are at capacity, and more families make their way across the border daily. Even turning to the local NGO's can be a risk, as some of the more devious ones offer their "help" in the form of human trafficking.

For the last decade, the relatively small Al-Neama Church in the Al-Mahata neighborhood of Amman, Jordan, has shown the Love of God by providing support and necessities for the Iraqi refugees (who are legally unable to get jobs in Jordan) living in that neighborhood through Global Partners in Peace and Development (like the cute kids in the picture above!). I have had the privilege of visiting this church, and I can say it embodies community in the truest since of the word! However, they are now faced with an additional 400 families from Syria who had to leave home with only the clothes on their backs and are desperately in need of even the most basic resources. This campaign is to support these families, and even though the goal is so high because of the large number of refugees, every dollar really does help. Even $30 is often enough to provide food for a family for a month; $20 a mattress or blanket; or $15 a case of baby formula.


When we hear about problems like this on the news, we often want to find a quick-fix to make them go away. Unfortunately, the world does not work that way; it takes hard work, time, and resources to change mindsets one person at a time and accomplish real good, but it is absolutely a cause worth pursuing! With your help, we can come that much closer to a peaceful and prosperous Middle East for their children and ours!
