Akos's Family Escape From Conflict

We are Ann & Fred Reekie from Saskatoon, SK, Canada. We do community volunteer work with Saskatoon Open Doors Society, a non-governmental agency that assists newcomers negotiate the transition to living in Canada. Ann was matched to Akossiwa Tamekloe, an immigrant from Togo, several years ago.
Togo is a small West African country that borders Ghana. For the past 50 years, Togo has been ruled by one family. A movement to restore democracy to Togo has been met with government control of all communication and indiscriminate violence. The government has armed young men with rifles and machetes. These men patrol the streets and have broken into houses, beating and killing people at random. Access to internet and cell phone services are restricted and possibly monitored when available.
Akos, a close-family friend and fellow church member, has received a plea for assistance from her sisters who live in Togo. The adults are afraid to leave the house to go to work and the children are not able to attend school. Akos goes for long periods where she is unable to contact her sister because the government regularly shuts down internet and cell service. The goal of this fundraiser is to assist Akos’s sister and her family in relocating to a safe haven in Ghana.
Because the family is in crisis, we have set a two-week target date for raising funds. At that time, Akos will arrange transfer all of the funds to a church elder in Ghana, who will meet Akos's family at the border. Akos trusts this church elder because he has handled similar transactions for Akos in the past with integrity. The funds will be used by the family to secure housing, purchase basic items to set up their home, purchase food, pay for school tuition for the children, and purchase school uniforms that are required for the children to attend school. The adults ran small shops in Togo and hope to do that in Ghana so they can be self-sufficient.
