"Aidan's Chance 2 Walk" is raising funds to give Aidan a chance for a pain free and independent life. Please help make this dream a reality.
Aidan is our wonderful 6 year old little boy. Aidan suffered from a lack of oxygen shortly after birth and as a result he has Cerebral Palsy. We are raising money for Aidan to have a life changing procedure called "Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy" (SDR), in St.Louis Missouri USA. The operation will provide an independent life and Future for Aidan.
We are hoping to raise $100,000US for the surgery & $50,000 for the cost of post-op therapy/rehab. This operation will give Aidan the opportunity of a life time, the chance 2 walk unaided, and pain free. All Aidan wants is to be able to run after his brother and sister, to play tag with his friends and play on a team sport.
Aidan is a loving & funny 6 years old little boy who has Spastic diplegia Cerebral Palsy. Spastic CP affects motor function and the ability to coordinate muscles properly, this is because of spasticity (tight,and rigid muscles). Diplegia means that his legs are primarily affected. After researching treatment options available to treat Aidan's spasticity, we came across an operation called Selective Dorsal
Rhizotomy (SDR). SDR is performed at St. Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri USA, by internationally renowned neurosurgeon Dr. T.S. Park. The Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery consists of locating the nerve roots in the spine that are very spastic and cutting them. Ultimately this will result in eliminating Aidan's spasticity permanently, and give him the chance 2 walk. Dr. Park has been performing this surgery for 25 years, he has performed over 2600 surgery's and has a 100 percent success rate. Of all surgical procedures currently being performed on patients with cerebral Palsy, Dr Park's SRD has undergone more scientific scrutiny than any other (including orthopaedic). Spastic cerebral palsy is a neurological motor condition. It's caused by an injury to the brain before birth or shortly after birth. Cerebral Palsy affects the muscles and a person's ability to control them. The brain injury that causes cerebral palsy affects motor function, balance, posture , coordination and spasticity ( tight, stiff muscles) of the limbs. Increased muscle tone or spasticity, make it extremely hard for Aidan to coordinate his muscles. Aidan's muscles continually contract , resulting in painful, stiff, & rigid legs. It's important to understand every case of Cerebral Palsy is unique to the individual, this is due to the type, severity, and timing of the brain damage.
A little background on Aidan On February 15, 2007 Aidan's journey began. He was born 10 weeks premature and weighed 3 pounds 2 ounces. He required ventilation to breath and a feeding tube for nutrition. Aidan spent 6 weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit. On March 28, 2007 we were elated to find out Aidan was strong enough to come home. After only being home a few days Aidan was struggling to breath. We returned to Peel Memorial hospital on April 3, it was determined very quickly that Aidan was in serious distress, his oxygen levels and heart rate were dangerously low. Aidan's life was in the doctors hands.
Aidan was resuscitated and put on life support, we were told he had a 50% chance of making it through the next 48 hours. Aidan was transferred to London Ontario Children's Hospital as they were better equipped to treat him. Our family was very grateful to be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House during Aidan's stay in the Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) in London. It was an extremely scary time for all of our family. Aidan remained in the Paediatric Critical Care for 14 days before being transferred back to Peel Memorial. We will be forever thankful to all the staff at Peel Memorial (now Brampton Civic) & London Children's Hospital.
Over the course of the next few months it became apparent that something was wrong with Aidan. His body was stiff, he spent all day and all night screaming.We also noticed Aidan was not meeting his milestones.
On February 21, 2008 we took Aidan to a neurologist. After the doctor assessed Aidan he told us that Aidan did indeed have Cerebral Palsy, we were devastated by the diagnoses. Although we were slightly prepared for the news, nothing really prepares you to learn that our son may never walk, or be fully cognitive .
The last 5 years we have had our ups and downs with Aidan's health, with many hospital admissions due to aspiration pneumonias , Reflux disease, feeding intolerance, G-tube insertion & G-tube removal (Aidan was fed through a tube in his stomach for a year). In between all of Aidan's health issues we did our very best to provide as much stretching and physio therapy as he could possibly tolerate. As well as occupational and speech therapy. We have exhausted every medical intervention available in Ontario to control Aidan's painful spasticity. Aidan has undergone years of physio, painful inter-muscular Botox injections, casting, bracing, oral narcotics ( Baclofen) all to no avail. Aidan has had to overcome many health challenges over the last 6 years, and has done so with such strength, and courage. Aidan is an inspiration to us and I know to many others. Please help us reach our goal of $75000.00 and let's give Aidan a chance.
