Learning Centre in Afghanistan

Donation protected
If you are reading this for the first time, please note this page was initially setup to raise money to build a new learning center (read more below) but unfortunately we were not able to reach the $55,000 required for full new construction.

Plan B was to help the village renovate the existing school building and make it into a safe place to learn and play.  Below is how the money will be spent.

1. Renovate roof and stair railings
2. Furnish nine classrooms (115 desks – 3 seaters)- WIP
3. Install whiteboards or new blackboards
3. Install windows
4. 600  uniforms
4. Start the building of a brick wall and a gate around the school to separate it from the road and cemetery (most of the work will be part of phase II (in 2 years) as the cost for this alone is $7000 to complete.)

For those who are not supportive of Plan B and wished to only support the learning center, please email me privately and I will transfer the money back.

I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for your support to this cause.  I will depart for Afghanistan December 11th and will return January 2nd, 2015, following which I will share photos and videos of the school’s progress.

I am nervous but also super excited. Thank you for help in making this happen!

Lots of Love,
Basima & family

This page has been set up to build a self-sustaining learning centre for the children of Afghanistan in a remote village near the city of Jalalabaad.  As the first step towards our goal, my parents have provided the land to build the centre. With donations from sponsors we hope to build a Learning & Recreational Centre where children will have a place for education, sports, crafts, fun and friendships. A place that will give them hope beyond the tragedies of war and despair.

The development of a Learning & Recreational Centre is a project that resonates close to our hearts. As immigrants from a war-torn region, my family is familiar with the struggles of the people of Afghanistan and this village. At the moment, there is only one local 'school', and sadly it lacks even the basics required for childhood education and development. The school consists of dirt floor, a handful of books for the entire class and blackboards shared among several classrooms.

The village is safe and the people are very supportive. Permissions from the local tribe leaders has been granted and they welcome the opportunity to have this centre built for the children.

The Centre would aim to remedy the lack of education and social infrastructure in the village. The Learning Centre would consist of classrooms for education, recreation facilities, skill development, and safe place for socialization. It will also aim to address special needs and mental health issues.
The Learning Centre, once operational, will be a registered not-for-profit organization and will provide opportunities for local and international volunteers.

Our experience as volunteers in projects around the world, including Afghanistan, Nepal, Guatemala, Cuba, El Salvador, India, Pakistan, and local Canadian projects have both inspired and prepared us for this project. In witnessing the development that comes from like-minded individuals aspiring to change poverty through education, this project is attainable.

Please help us as we build a Learning & Recreational Centre for Afghan children and give them hope for a brighter future.
