Hello,
My name is Misrak Assefa and I am currently the owner of Addis Red Sea Restaurant in Boston, MA. My Addis Red Sea journey began 28 years ago on a crisp and vibrant Boston day in November 1987. Both my husband Bekele and I finally made this dream into a reality and it has been such an extremely enjoyable and lesson filled ride, but it also hasn’t been easy. Two and a half years ago my husband, friend and business partner shockingly passed away. After closing down the Cambridge, MA location due to an overwhelming amount of theft, I stand here today running the Addis Red Sea Restaurant located on Tremont Street in the heart of Boston.
Now, you may ask, “Why is Addis Red Sea important?” Addis Red Sea provides a number of history lessons to numerous students that cross its path. Students from elementary school to college have came to me here and told me they had a history assignment for school or asked me about the Ethiopian culture out of simple curiosity. For example, 3 years ago 85 students from Tokyo, Japan were coming to tour Boston. Prior to their visit I received a call from their teacher stating that she wanted to make sure her students could come to Addis Red Sea to complete their assignment exploring Ethiopia. My husband and I talked about Ethiopia being the main source for the Blue Nile, origin of coffee, and one of the few African countries that have never been colonized. After asking questions and jotting down notes they left with smiles on their faces. They were able to immerse themselves in a new culture and broaden their horizons about a nation. Addis Red Sea also serves as an art center in the heart of Boston. Numerous artists that have visited were inspired by the work and amazed by the ancient art that lives on our walls. In addition to those lovely paintings we are also known for our expansive list of tasty Vegetarian and Vegan options. I think that is one of the main reasons why people from distant locations like Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and all over New England come here. Lastly, Addis Red Sea is a second home to the numerous Ethiopian children that are adopted by Americans in Boston and the New England Area. Many families rely on us to supply the rich Ethiopian foods that aren’t often offered in the New England and Boston area. It’s also a place where loving memories have been made.
Addis Red Sea is not only about the food, it is about the history lessons, human connections, heart warming memories and opportunity for both the Boston community and New England Area to immerse itself in the Ethiopian culture and history right at its fingertips.
Due to the serious theft that occurred at the Cambridge, MA location, the Boston location has been negatively impacted. I am a firm believer that good things comes to those who work hard to earn it and that one shouldn’t rely on handouts, but I am at a point where I need help to keep Addis Red Sea alive. Every single dollar and share counts and it will be greatly appreciated.
