People of all ages and abilities participate and engage in multisport, endurance, adventure and challenge events, either as competitive athletes, for fun, personal achievement or to raise money and awareness for noble and worthy causes.
But are you aware that over 45 fatalities of UK citizens have occurred in swimming, cycling, running or challenge events since 2010?
As someone with a long history of involvement in swimming and triathlon and as an event organiser who knows the risks as well as the benefits of taking part, I am laying the foundations with supportive colleagues for start-up charity Accolaid (Adventure & challenge event competitor’s organisation providing legacy and aid) to tackle the financial, mental and physical issues resulting from these fatalities and serious incidents.
Accolaid will provide much-needed support to the challenge event participants, their families and event organisers, as well as:
Supporting and encouraging the use of new technologies and processes to assist in preventing incidents.
Contributing to research and the development of national and global statistics on incidents to highlight the extent, the causes and the underlying trends of fatalities.
Creating awareness of the risks as well as promoting the benefits from taking part in challenge events.
Preventing and detecting problems to reduce the risk of incidents.
Providing legacy and bestowing accolade on those challengers who have died.
