Ten years ago, soulmates Safia Abdulai & Gerald “Junayd” Oliver, met and married in Ghana. Their love has reached many and created 5 precious, smart, not to mention, adorable children: Abdush-Shaheed, age 8; Hamnah, age 6; Muhammad, age 5; Yasir, age 2; and Hafsah, 5 months.
Gerald Lee Oliver, Jr., popularly known as ‘Junayd’ is son of Gerald Lee Oliver, Sr. & Brenda Oliver, and brother to Eleanor Oliver, Daniel Oliver, and Cicely Oliver.
The entire family moved to Ghana in 2016 to allow the children to meet Safia's extended family, while Gerald finished his Masters in Social Work. In 2017, Gerald came back to Austin, and for the past year, worked tirelessly to provide for his family and prepare for their arrival back here in Austin, Texas. During this time he was only able to visit his family in Ghana every 3-5 months. We were delighted to learn that on April 13, 2018 Safia and the children would be moving back to the States, ending a difficult year-long separation from his family.
On April 1, 2018, just 3 days before Gerald was scheduled to arrive in Ghana to prepare the family for their return, Safia suffered a fatal asthma attack.
This loss has rocked the foundation of our families, and we are asking for help for Gerald/Junayd and the children as he navigates the world of being a widower and single father of five little ones. The funds would help Gerald provide for the children's care and development in the way he and Safia have always planned. More than ninety percent of the photos in the slideshow were taken by Safia. We see the fun, light, laughter, exploration, and joy of a family through a loving wife and mother's eyes who wanted to show her children the world.
