Joshua, our 4 year old son, has Autism Spectrum Disorder. He was evaluated April 2013 at Kennedy Krieger Institute. We are working towards getting him back into Speech therapy and in addition will be starting ABA therapy. He attends Special Education Preschool 5 mornings a week. He's in Pre-K.
What can a service dog do to help Joshua?
Joshua has the following challenges:
• He is non-verbal
• He has elopement behaviors, meaning he tends to run away, often into busy streets
• He has sensory processing difficulties, and he often covers his ears and puts non-food items in his mouth
• He has “meltdowns” when he becomes overwhelmed with daily tasks. This causes him to scream, cover his eyes, and throw objects.
There are many ways in which a service dog can benefit him:
• Use physical prompts to communicate to Joshua
• Prevent him from bolting into dangerous situations
• Deter Joshua from putting unsafe items in his mouth
• Give affection to help soothe Joshua’s meltdowns
We've read many success stories about children doing amazing things because of their special dog.
We want Joshua to have every opportunity possible to grow and succeed. I've seen him with other dogs and he just lights up with joy!
We have found a wonderful woman who breeds and trains dogs specifically for children with special needs.
Unfortnuately this expense is not covered by our health insurance.
Our goal is $7,500 which includes purchase of dog, minimum 12 months training, service tags/vest/accessories, & travel expenses.
We are asking for as much help from family and friends as possible to cover the expenses.
We appreciate and love every one of you for thinking about our special little guy!
Thank you!
